ProVu Module Delivers Real-Time Video Reliably Over WiFi

27 July 2006

Wireless video specialist ProVision Communications announced its first wireless video product, the PrOvu 100, today. The PrOvu 100 is a module for transmitting live video reliably over WiFi networks, and overcomes the quality and reliability problems usually associated with delivering live video over WiFi. This opens up WiFi for the many applications where high quality real-time video is essential – ranging from sports events to surveillance/monitoring.

WiFi is now a well proven and essentially universal wireless system, but it is optimised for the transmission of data in a way that is not ideal for the transmission of video. As a result, to achieve good video quality requires extensive buffering and retransmission, which in turn means significant delays. These delays do not matter much when you are, say, watching a movie streamed to a PC, but they do if you are present at a football match, looking at some close-up action transmitted to your PDA simultaneously with watching the live play.

Building on ProVision’s extensive background in wireless video technology, the PrOvu 100 overcomes these issues to deliver real time video reliably over standard WiFi networks. The DSP based video module transmits video from any suitable source (viz. directly from a camera, or from edited feeds). The video can then be received on regular WiFi enabled PC’s or PDA’s, running ProVision’s error resilient software. The PrOvu 100 is intended for any application where high quality real time wireless video is required, such as music festivals, sporting events, industrial inspection, security work, video production studios, and military systems.

Professor David Bull, Director of Video Technology at ProVision Communications, said “We specialise in the reliable delivery of high quality video in real time over wireless networks – indeed, we have built an international reputation for this over the past five years. Consumers have high expectations of video quality nowadays, yet standard WiFi systems cannot deliver good enough video quality for live video applications, such as motor racing or football matches. Our new module overcomes these problems, and opens the door to providing spectators at major events with an outstanding video experience on their PDA, or other handheld device.”

The PrOvu 100 module will be available from [September 2006] to OEM’s and system integrators. It is the first of a range of advanced wireless video modules under development by ProVision Communications.
